To be a hero is a lofty goal many of us don't expect to achieve but secretly wish to. Being a hero isn't necessarily being a high-profile personality or even being known. We probably rub shoulders with heroes in the course of our daily lives without even knowing it. Heroes come in all age categories, as well. Heroes, though, have some common characteristics.
They often act with humility, support justice or fair play, and show mercy, all of which requires personal cost. Heroes usually have courage of conviction, dismiss pride, value others, aren't afraid of sacrifice and giving up what is rightfully theirs. They strive to be fair and are good at showing kindness in dealings with their fellow man. Big and small acts add up.
About this time, I bet you have some examples of personal heroes in mind. They may be famous or just everyday people only a few know. Heroes make choices at pivotal points to make a difference. Risk can be a factor, but not a motivator. HEROES is an organization that enables anyone to make the choice to be a hero. The needs have always been so great around us, but there still is something each one can do about them. HEROES focuses on connecting under-served populations with those of us who may never personally meet them, but can still make an impact and change their present and along with their future.
Get involved. Act on your nobler principles, and you'll find that being a hero is easier than you thought and habit-forming. We really can affect change no matter the odds. We all have opportunities and just need to see them for what they are.
Be a hero... make someone's life better, just because you can.
