by His design will be posting weekly, now, to provide a nurturing time of comfort, exploration, and a safe place to process.
Mainly, though, it’s meant to promote an unhurried time alone with the Lord. You may find yourself in His presence as you park yourself at His feet, drinking in His wisdom and words of life.
It’s the path to peace, joy, and strength. Join in—in the midst of busyness, responsibilities, and tedium. Come apart for a 10-minute retreat, a respite along the way.
The Heavens are Telling
“The heavens are telling of the glory of God and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge…The law of the Lord is perfect (blameless), restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple…The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether…Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:1-2, 7, 9b, 14).
The weather in Colorado in recent days has been ideal: warm days full of sunshine, blue skies, and gentle breezes. As a result I couldn’t resist the urge to do a few more winter preparatory chores in my garden and even recruited my husband, who mowed the last of the meadow grasses while I snatched sly weeds hiding among the now leafless verbena bushes.
That accomplished, we redistributed the pea gravel along the meandering walk, mended some loose fence pickets, clipped the tomato plants to the ground and removed their stakes, cleaned the pond of dead leaves and filled it for the birds to romp in and refresh themselves. Much of my time in the garden reminds me that I have a Maker who tends to me, too.
He provides beauty for me to enjoy every day, in every season. He gives me work to occupy my mind, hands, and heart. He shows me my connection to others who need His attention and love. And He listens to my problems and smooths my emotions.
Yesterday in the garden, though, it struck me that my Lord prepares us for our winters, too. As our days wane and the shadows grow long, He readies us for some of winter’s blasts before our long-awaited spring re-emerges and our new life commences. All purposeful and necessary, labor rewarded.
So, my garden gives testimony to, “pours forth speech” about the glory of God, “making wise the simple.” His law is blameless, and yielding to it restores my soul.
Pray this Song with Me:
“Let me be an instrument to exalt and extend Jesus’ name…as the waters cover the sea. Open the heavens, O Lord…Cover the earth with Your glory, cover the earth with Your glory, cover the earth with the sound of heaven…As the waters cover the sea, cover the earth.”
